AT THE KITIMAT RIVER

Your fishing rods and hip waders will get a real work out at the Kitimat River which has some of the best fishing you'll find anywhere. You'll encounter anglers from as far away as Europe and Asia as you fish from the river bank, wade out in your hip waders or drift down the river in a drift boat to catch:

  • chinook (spring) salmon,
  • chum salmon,
  • pink salmon (humpies)
  • coho salmon,
  • steelhead,
  • cutthroat trout,
  • and dolly varden trout

Kitimat is a fishing enthusiasts' retirement paradise.

Weighing up to 20lbs., the hard fighting steelhead are a good bet from mid- April to mid-May. Only hatchery steelhead, identified by clipped adipose fins, can be kept.

Available in greatest numbers from late June through July, the monstrous chinook (spring) salmon usually weigh 30 to 40 lbs. and can be 50 lbs. and over.

There's lots of action in July through mid August when both chum and pink salmon are in the river.

Coho salmon, the best tasting Kitimat salmon, begin returning to the river in the second half of August, peak in September and are sometimes available into October.

Our sea going cuttroat trout return in late August through September, spend the winter in the river and return to the ocean in March after spawning in February.

Hardy fishing enthusiasts can fish year round. Fishing for cutthroat and dolly varden trout is usually good in January and February.
