LAKELSE LAKE
FUN, FITNESS & FRIENDS
Lakesle Lake, a short thirty minute drive north of Kitimat, is a popular playground for Kitimat residents. It's name "Lakelse" comes the Tsimshian language and means "fresh water mussels" which indeed are found at the bottom of the lake.
A good number of Kitimatians own lakeside cottages and those who don't camp at the Furlong Bay Provincial Campsite, rent a cabin at Water Lily Bay, a private resort, or just come and spend a fun filled day at Lakelse Provincial Park.
Surrounded by the snow capped mountains of the Kitmat Range and rimmed by forests with stands of old growth cedar, hemlock & Sitka spruce, Lakelse Lake offers a long and varied list of outdoor recreational activities:
- swimming, camping, boating, hiking, sailing, picnicing, canoeing, fishing, sailing, wildlife viewing & photography, water skiing, bird watching, wind surfing, volleyball, kayaking and sunbathing on the sandy beach in the summer and
- snowshoeing on the hiking trails and ice skating in winter (check for proper ice thickness first).
Lakelse Provincal Park is 354 hectacres in size and consists of three parts:
- Furlong Bay Campsite
- The Picnic Site
- Gruchy's Beach
