MULTICULTURALISM
Mulitculturalism is a hallmark of Kitimat. The Haisla people have lived here from time immemorial. Their rich culture adds a special flavour to life in the Pacific Inland Coast.
In the 1950s immigrants from many countries...Portugal, Italy, Germany, Greece and others...came to work at Alcan's new aluminun smelter. Throughout the following decades, immigrants from Finland, India, Fiji, The Philippines, China, Thailand and other countries have joined our cultural mix...some in large numbers such as the Finns and some in small numbers such as those from China and Thailand.
A good number of Francophone Canadians, who were transferred from aluminum smelters in Quebec to our smelter by Rio Tinto Alcan, also call Kitimat home.
