WOMEN'S GROUPS
THE SNOWFLAKE HATTITUDES (Red Hat Society Chapter)
Fun, fun and more fun is the purpose of this lively women's group which is part of the international Red Hat Society. They meet monthly for dinner or to go to the theatre dressed in red hats and red and purple clothing. Group members also attend Red Hat Society Conventions. Currently all members are 50+. Women under fifty are welcome to join although they wear pink instead of red.
The Snowflake Hattitudes are organizing an annual get-together to coincide with Kitimat's Bull-a-rama on June 2nd . A full weekend of events has been planned and invitaions are being sent to other Red Hat Society chapters throughout northwestern B.C.
BETA SIGMA PHI
Life, Learning and Friendship is the motto of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, an international non-academic sorority. The Kitimat chapter meets twice a month. At each meeting, the business meeting is followed by a learning program. Program topics are wide ranging from Mexico to flower arranging to autism.
While the main purpose of the organization is friendship and learning, the Kitimat chapter also does community service by holding fund raising activities and donating the funds to a local charity such as the Human Society, the Special Olympics or the hospital. For several years they have organized a fashion show that both raises funds and delights the many women who attend.
An important contribution the Beta Sigma Phi makes to the community each year is its sponsorship and organization of the Lady of the Year award.
TAMITIK STATUS OF WOMEN
Tamitik Status of Women, a feminist organization, has been providing programs and services focused on intervention and prevention of violence and poverty issues in Kitimat for over thirty years.They believe that all women and their children have the right to be free of violence and abuse. Their programs include:
- Outreach Worker/ Supportive Counsellor
- Transition House - Dunmore Place
- Discovering Healthy Relationships Counsellor
- Stopping the Violence Counsellor
- Anti-Poverty Programs
