HIRSCH CREEK GOLF COURSE
Designed by Nature and Two of Canada's Best Course Architects
This beautiful, challenging course was designed by two great Canadian golf architects, Norman Woods and Les Furber.
Woods' courses host major PGA Golf Campionships, the US Open and Ryder Cup matches. His front nine in Kitimat is links-style where golfers swallow pride, use more club than they think they need, avoid sides of elevated greens that would humble Phil Mickelson, and stay out of Britsih Open style bunkers.
The back nine was designed by nature and built by Les Furber. He spread his nine over a large area, using terrain to sustain views and for major (170 foot!) tee elevations. "God makes stunning golf courses - a good designer just has to finish them off", Furber said recently. No wonder Northern BC Tourism calls Hirsch Creek one of the most scenic courses in the province. Given that BC scenery is so spectacular, Hirsch Creek is definitely something special.
Both Kitimat designers learned from the best of the best. Woods trained under Canadian Hall of Fame course designer Stanley Thompson, and Furber under noted US designer Robert Trent Jones. Thompson and Trent Jones collaborated on several Canadian courses, including Banff Springs Hotel Championship Course.
These connections may explain Hirsch Creek's artistic landscaping, innovative bunkers, liberal water features, and deft placement of hazards to force strategic shots. Golf, as "no risk - no reward" endeavor doesn't get any better than in Kitimat.
